Isabella Archibald, a junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering, was one of three University of Utah students to be awarded the Goldwater Scholarship for 2020.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was congressionally established in 1986. It serves as a memorial to honor the work of Senator Barry Goldwater, former Arizona Senator. The foundation provides scholarships to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in engineering, mathematics, and natural sciences, in order to ensure that the US produces highly-qualified professionals in those fields.

Archibald studies human genetic mutations and their effect on synaptic transmission under adjunct BME and Howard Hughes professor Erik Jorgenson. Her career goals include earning a Ph.D. in Genetics while conducting research in environmental plant genetics as related to climate change.
